Aluminium Slat Gates & Fencing the Northern Beaches

Salt air, steep driveways and bushland edges. Specification matters more here than anywhere.

Local context

Working in Northern Beaches

The Northern Beaches is the most demanding environment we work in, for two unrelated reasons. The first is salt. Properties within a few streets of the water sit in a genuinely corrosive atmosphere, and it is the main argument for aluminium over steel here — aluminium does not rust, so the failure mode that eats steel gates near the coast simply does not apply. The powder-coated finish still needs washing down, and coastal properties need it more often than inland ones.

The second is topography. Driveways off the peninsula roads are steep, and steep entries are where swing gates go wrong: the leaf fouls the rising ground before it opens. Sliding gates solve it outright, and vertical slats handle the cross-fall better than horizontal ones when a swing gate is still viable.

Bushland interfaces are common through the western side of the LGA. If your property is in a bush fire prone area, materials and construction may be subject to specific requirements — that is a matter for your certifier and the council, and worth confirming before you specify anything.

What we are usually asked for here

  • Sliding gates on steep driveways
  • Coastal boundary and privacy fencing
  • Pool-area screening (subject to barrier requirements)
  • Front fencing on sloping frontages
  • Screening for outdoor showers, bins and plant

Site conditions worth planning for

  • Salt exposure makes aluminium the sensible material choice and makes regular washing down more important
  • Steep driveways frequently rule out swing gates — check run-back space for a slider
  • Cross-fall across an opening favours vertical slats if a swing gate is used
  • Bush fire prone land may carry construction requirements — confirm with your certifier
  • Wind exposure on headlands affects panel and post sizing

Styles that suit Northern Beaches

Based on the housing, terrain and exposure described above — not a fixed rule, and every project gets specified on its own merits.

Questions

Northern Beaches — questions we get asked

Is aluminium suitable for a beachfront property?
It is the material we would choose there. Aluminium does not rust, which removes the failure mode that ends most steel fencing near the coast. The powder-coated finish still benefits from being washed down with fresh water, and close to the surf that is worth doing more often than it would be inland.
My driveway is very steep. What gate can I use?
A sliding gate is usually the answer, because it never has to swing over rising ground. It does need clear run-back space beside the opening, roughly as wide as the opening itself. If you have that space, send photos looking along it as well as at the opening.
