The detail

About aluminium horizontal slat single gates

A horizontal slat single gate is the most common gate we build. It is one leaf, hung on hinges down one side, with flat aluminium slats running left to right between two vertical stiles. Because the frame is fabricated to your measurements, the slat pattern lands correctly at the top and bottom rather than finishing on an awkward half-slat the way a cut-down stock gate does.

The decision that matters most is slat spacing. A wide gap gives you an open screen that still marks the boundary; a tight gap gets you close to a solid panel with a fraction of the visual weight. It is the same extrusion either way, so you are choosing how much you want to see through rather than choosing a different product. If you are matching an existing slat fence, send us a photo and we will match the rhythm.

Openings are rarely square. The arched brick entry in our gallery, and the gate built with a matching fixed panel beside it, are both single gates made to suit an opening that no standard gate would have fitted. If your opening is out of plumb, out of level, or wider than a sensible single leaf, tell us in your enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether a single gate is the right call.

Suits

  • Side and rear pedestrian access
  • Courtyard and garden entries
  • Narrow single-vehicle openings
  • Bin and service access alongside a house
  • Filling a gap in an existing fence line

Before you order

  • The gate needs a clear arc to swing into — measure that space, not just the opening
  • Hinge side is set at fabrication, so nominate which side you want it hung
  • Wider single leaves need heavier hinges and posts

Questions

Aluminium Horizontal Slat Single Gates — questions we get asked

How wide can a single horizontal slat gate be?
It depends on the height, the slat spacing and what the gate is hanging off. A tightly spaced gate is heavier and catches more wind than an open one, and a masonry pier carries load differently to a steel post. Rather than quote a number that may not apply to your opening, we size the frame, hinges and posts against your actual measurements at quoting. If a single leaf is not sensible at your width we will say so and suggest a double or sliding gate instead.
Which side will my gate be hinged on?
Whichever side you nominate. Hinge side is set during fabrication, so it needs to be confirmed before the gate is built. Stand outside looking in, decide which side you want the hinges on and which way you want it to swing, and note it in your enquiry.
Can you match my existing slat fence?
Usually, yes. Send photos of the existing fence with your enquiry, ideally straight-on and from a few metres back so we can see the slat and gap proportions. We will match the spacing and the colour as closely as the profiles allow and tell you up front if an exact match is not achievable.
Do I need new posts?
Not necessarily. Gates can be hung off new posts, existing posts, brick piers or a wall, provided what you are hanging off is sound and can carry the load. Tell us what you are working with — and send a photo — and we will confirm what is needed as part of your quote.
