The detail

About aluminium horizontal slat fence panels

On a straight run over reasonably level ground, panels are the sensible way to build a slat fence. The run is divided into equal bays, one panel is made for that bay size, and it repeats. Fewer variables, less set-out, and a consistent result along the whole boundary.

The panels are still made to your dimensions — we size the bay to divide evenly into your run rather than making you accept a stock width and finish with an odd offcut at one end. That is the difference between a panel system and a made-to-measure panel: the repetition is a construction decision, not a limit on the size.

Slat spacing is where you choose how much this fence screens. Our garden boundary photo shows a tight spacing that reads almost solid from a few metres back, which is the usual choice for a boundary fence. Open it up and the same panel becomes a screen that defines the line without closing the outlook.

Panels can also sit on top of something else. The retaining wall photo in the gallery shows exactly that — slat panels mounted above a rendered block wall, with posts set to follow the fall of the ground so the top line stays level while the wall steps beneath it.

Suits

  • Straight boundary and side runs
  • Fencing above a retaining or block wall
  • Front fencing on level frontages
  • Screening a pool pump, bin store or air-conditioning unit
  • Replacing an existing timber or Colorbond boundary

Worth knowing

  • Closely spaced slats catch more wind, which affects post and frame sizing on tall or exposed panels
  • Horizontal lines make any out-of-level ground more noticeable, so raked or stepped runs need to be planned

Questions

Aluminium Horizontal Slat Fence Panels — questions we get asked

What size are the panels?
Whatever divides your run sensibly. We set the bay width from your total length so the panels repeat evenly and you are not left with a narrow infill at one end. Give us the run length and any fixed points — corners, piers, existing posts — and we will work out the set-out.
Can panels be fitted on top of a retaining wall?
Yes, and it is a common arrangement — the photo of panels above a rendered block wall in our gallery is exactly that. What matters is that the wall is sound and can take the post fixings. Send photos of the wall and note its construction in your enquiry.
How private is a slat panel fence?
It depends entirely on the slat spacing you choose. Tight spacing reads close to solid from a few metres away; open spacing gives you a defined boundary you can still see through. Tell us what you are trying to achieve — privacy, airflow, or just a boundary line — and we will recommend a spacing.
