The detail

About custom horizontal slat fencing

Not every boundary is a straight, level line. Ground falls away, the fence turns a corner, a tree or a meter box interrupts the run, or the neighbour's wall stops at a different height to yours. Custom fencing is what you order when the run cannot simply repeat.

Horizontal slats need particular care on sloping ground, because horizontal lines make any disagreement with the ground line obvious. There are two honest ways to handle it: step the panels down in even increments so the eye reads a deliberate rhythm, or rake the whole panel so the slats run parallel to the ground. Stepping generally looks better on a fall of any significance; raking suits a gentle, consistent grade. We will tell you which suits your site rather than defaulting to whichever is easier to build.

Custom runs are also where the boundary conditions get resolved: how the fence meets an existing brick pier, what happens where it steps up onto a retaining wall, how it terminates against the house, and where the gate — if there is one — falls in the set-out so its slat lines align with the panels either side.

If you are pricing a custom run, photos are worth far more than a description. A few shots along the boundary from both ends, plus one of anything unusual, will get you a much more accurate quote.

Suits

  • Sloping and stepped boundaries
  • Runs interrupted by piers, trees or services
  • Fencing that has to meet existing walls or structures
  • Non-standard heights and irregular bay widths
  • Fence and gate runs that need to align as one set-out

Worth knowing

  • Closely spaced slats catch more wind, which affects post and frame sizing on tall or exposed panels
  • Horizontal lines make any out-of-level ground more noticeable, so raked or stepped runs need to be planned

Questions

Custom Horizontal Slat Fencing — questions we get asked

Should slat fencing be stepped or raked on a slope?
On any noticeable fall, stepping usually looks better — the panels stay level and drop in even increments, which reads as deliberate. Raking, where the whole panel tilts to follow the grade, suits gentle and consistent slopes but starts to look wrong as the angle increases. Send photos along the run and we will recommend one.
Can the fencing match my gate?
Yes, and it should be quoted together so the slat spacing and rail heights line up across both. A gate quoted separately from its fence is the most common reason the lines do not carry through.
What information do you need to quote a custom run?
Total run length, the height you want, a note of any slope or steps, and photos taken along the boundary from both ends. Add anything that interrupts the run — piers, trees, downpipes, meter boxes, existing posts you want to keep.
