Detail

About aluminium vertical picket fencing

Picket fencing keeps a frontage open. It defines the boundary, contains a yard and frames an entry without hiding the house or garden behind it — which is why it still suits period, cottage and Federation homes where a slat fence would look out of place.

In aluminium, the traditional proportions survive and the maintenance does not. Nothing rots at the base, nothing swells, no pickets work loose, and there is no repainting.

The detail that lifts these fences is colour. Frame, posts and pickets are separately specifiable — the white-with-black, cream-with-green and cream-with-red combinations across our photography are all done that way.

Strengths

Why people choose vertical picket fencing

  • Keeps an open, traditional frontage rather than walling it off
  • Handles sloping ground well — panels rake and step cleanly
  • Frame, post and picket colours can differ for a two-tone look
  • Suits period, cottage and heritage-adjacent homes where slats look wrong

Trade-offs

What to weigh up

  • Picket spacing means this style is not a privacy screen
  • Pool barriers have specific legal requirements — see the note on our fencing pages before specifying a picket fence near a pool

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How far apart are the pickets?
Spacing is set for your run rather than fixed. It is normally chosen for appearance and to match an existing fence, but if the fence is containing a small dog or is anywhere near a pool the requirement changes — tell us what the fence needs to do and we will set the spacing to suit.
Can I match an existing timber picket fence?
Usually. Send straight-on photos from a few metres back, a close-up of a picket and rail, and the height. We will match proportion, spacing and colour as closely as the aluminium profiles allow, and tell you where an exact match is not achievable.
