White picket fencing with flat-top pickets at an even spacing, run along a garden boundary. The spacing keeps the outlook open rather than screening it.

The detail

About aluminium vertical picket fence panels

Picket panels keep a frontage open. Pickets are spaced so you can see through, light and air move past, and the garden behind stays part of the streetscape. On a cottage, a Federation home or anywhere a slat fence would look wrong, this is the fence that suits the house.

Building it in aluminium keeps the traditional proportions and removes the maintenance that killed timber picket fences. Nothing swells, nothing rots at the base, no pickets work loose off the rails, and there is no repainting cycle — the powder-coated finish is the finish.

Colour is where these fences get interesting. Frame, posts and pickets can each be specified separately, which is how the combinations across our fencing photography are achieved: white pickets with black posts, cream with green, cream with red, and a single-tone dark bronze run. A contrasting post reads as a deliberate detail rather than an accident.

Picket panels handle slopes well. Because the pickets are vertical, panels step down a grade cleanly — the white-and-black run along a sloping footpath in our gallery shows exactly that.

Suits

  • Front fencing on garden-facing frontages
  • Period, cottage and heritage-adjacent homes
  • Containing pets and children in a front yard
  • Sloping frontages that need to step down cleanly
  • Boundary fencing where an open outlook is wanted

Worth knowing

  • Picket spacing means this style is not a privacy screen
  • Pool barriers have specific legal requirements — see the note on our fencing pages before specifying a picket fence near a pool

Questions

Aluminium Vertical Picket Fence Panels — questions we get asked

Can the posts be a different colour to the pickets?
Yes. Frame, posts and pickets are separately specifiable — every two-tone combination in our photos is done exactly that way. Note the colour you want for each element in your enquiry, or ask us to suggest a combination that suits your house.
Can picket fencing be used around a pool?
Pool barriers are subject to specific legal requirements covering gap sizes, heights, climbable zones and gate hardware. A standard picket fence should not be assumed to meet them. If your fence is anywhere near a pool, tell us in your enquiry so it is dealt with properly.
Does picket fencing give any privacy?
No. Pickets are spaced to keep the frontage open, which is the whole point of the style. If you want screening, look at horizontal or vertical slat fencing with a tight spacing, or louvre panels.
How does it handle a sloping frontage?
Well. The pickets are vertical, so panels step down a slope in clean increments while every picket stays plumb — the run along a sloping footpath in our gallery is a good example.
