Aluminium Slat Gates & Fencing the Inner West

Federation semis, Victorian terraces and rear lanes — period frontages with modern rear yards.

Local context

Working in Inner West

The Inner West splits neatly into two jobs. At the front, period homes with proportions worth respecting: picket fencing, low front gates and openings that match the era of the house. At the back, contemporary renovations that want the opposite — slat screening, privacy from a neighbouring second storey, and a rear gate onto the lane.

Rear lane access is the local specialty. Lane gates take heavier use than front gates, often serve as vehicle access into an off-street space barely bigger than the car, and frequently have no room to swing at all. Sliding gates and closely spaced horizontal slats do most of the work here.

Semis create a specific problem too: the shared side boundary is usually the only side access, it is narrow, and whatever you build has to work for both households. Gates in these positions are worth measuring carefully and hanging so they swing clear of the path rather than into it.

What we are usually asked for here

  • Rear lane vehicle and pedestrian gates
  • Picket front fencing on Federation and Victorian homes
  • Privacy screening from neighbouring second storeys
  • Side-passage gates on semis
  • Slat screening around rear decks and extensions

Site conditions worth planning for

  • Rear lanes rarely allow a gate to swing — sliding is often the only option
  • Heritage conservation areas cover much of the Inner West; check front fence controls with council
  • Period frontages usually suit picket; modern rear yards usually suit slat or louvre
  • Shared side boundaries on semis need the swing direction thought through

Questions

Inner West — questions we get asked

What gate works best on a rear lane?
Usually a sliding gate, because lanes almost never give you room to swing a leaf out and there is rarely space inside the property either. Where there is a little swing room, a double gate splits the arc in half. Measure the run-back space beside the opening before you decide.
Will picket fencing suit a Federation house?
It usually suits it better than anything else we build — the proportions are right for the era and the frontage stays open. Aluminium keeps the look without the repainting cycle that timber pickets need.
