Charcoal louvre double gates. The blades are set on an angle so the gate blocks the direct sightline while still letting air through.

The photo shows the louvre blade profile, angle and finish on a gate. We do not yet have project photography of a completed custom louvre screen.

The detail

About custom louvre fencing

Custom louvre work is usually targeted rather than boundary-length. Someone is overlooked from one particular window, or a courtyard needs enclosing on two and a half sides, or a rooftop terrace needs a screen at a height and angle nothing standard will produce. The value is in solving that specific problem properly.

Because the screening depends on blade angle, custom louvre is worth thinking about in three dimensions rather than as a flat length of fence. The angle can be set against the actual sightline you are trying to break — which might be from an upstairs window, not from the footpath — and the screen height can be limited to just the zone that matters instead of walling in the whole space.

Custom runs are also where louvre gets combined with other infill: a louvre section where privacy is needed, slats where it is not, and the two set out so the rails line through. That is often a better outcome than louvre everywhere, both in cost and in how the space feels.

Photographs are essential here. Take shots from where the person looking in actually stands, not just from your side of the boundary, and we can set the blade angle against the real problem.

Suits

  • Screening a specific overlooking window or elevated sightline
  • Courtyard and terrace enclosures
  • Mixed runs combining louvre and slat sections
  • Non-standard heights and returns
  • Screening plant and service areas on commercial sites

Worth knowing

  • Blade angle sets which direction the privacy works in, so it needs to be nominated up front
  • More material per square metre than a widely spaced slat panel

Questions

Custom Louvre Fencing — questions we get asked

Can you screen an upstairs window looking into my yard?
Often, yes — that is one of the main reasons people choose louvre. The blade angle can be set against that particular sightline rather than a generic one. Take a photo from as close as you can get to where the person is looking from, and one from your side, and include both with your enquiry.
Can I mix louvre and slat sections in one run?
Yes, and it is frequently the better answer — louvre where privacy is needed, slats elsewhere. Quoted as one run, the rails and post positions line through so it reads as a single fence rather than two.
How high can a louvre screen be?
That depends on the site, the exposure and what the screen is fixed to, and it is sized against your specific conditions at quoting rather than to a number quoted on a web page. Local planning controls can also apply to fence and screen heights, which is worth checking with your council.
