Charcoal louvre double gates. The blades are set on an angle so the gate blocks the direct sightline while still letting air through.

The photo shows the louvre blade profile, angle and finish on a gate. We do not yet have project photography of a completed louvre fence run.

The detail

About aluminium louvre fence panels

Louvre fence panels exist for one situation in particular: you are overlooked, and you want it to stop, but you do not want to live behind a wall. The angled blades block the direct sightline from a neighbouring window, a footpath or a rear lane, while air passes straight through the panel.

That airflow is not a minor detail. A solid fence of the same height traps heat against it, kills the breeze through a courtyard and takes far more wind load into its posts. A louvre panel gives you the same visual barrier without those consequences, which is why it turns up so often around pools, courtyards and small rear yards where a solid fence would make the space unbearable.

Blade angle is nominated before manufacture and determines which direction the screening works in. Angled one way you get privacy from outside looking in while retaining an outward view from inside at a downward angle; reversed, the opposite. Tell us what you are screening and from where.

Louvre is the heaviest infill per square metre that we build, so post spacing and fixings matter more here than on a spaced slat run. On a panel system that is straightforward to allow for, but it does mean a louvre fence is not simply a slat fence with different infill.

Suits

  • Screening from neighbouring windows or a rear lane
  • Courtyards and small rear yards where airflow matters
  • Pool surrounds where privacy is wanted (subject to barrier requirements)
  • Screening plant, bins and service areas
  • Boundaries where a solid fence would catch too much wind

Worth knowing

  • Blade angle sets which direction the privacy works in, so it needs to be nominated up front
  • More material per square metre than a widely spaced slat panel

Questions

Aluminium Louvre Fence Panels — questions we get asked

Is a louvre fence as private as a solid fence?
On the sightline the blades are angled against, close to it — there is no straight line through the panel at eye level. It is not equivalent to a solid fence from every possible angle, and we would rather say that plainly than oversell it. If total screening from all angles is the requirement, tell us and we will discuss the alternatives.
Can louvre fencing be used as a pool fence?
Pool barriers are subject to specific legal requirements in each state covering gap sizes, heights, climbable zones and gate hardware. We will not describe a louvre fence as pool compliant on a web page. If the fence is anywhere near a pool, say so in your enquiry so it is addressed properly.
Why choose louvre over closely spaced slats?
Louvre gets you screening from the blade angle rather than from a narrow gap, which means better airflow and less wind load for a similar level of privacy. Closely spaced slats are lighter and usually cheaper to build. Which is right depends on how much airflow you need and how exposed the boundary is.
