Aluminium Slat Gates & Fencing City of Sydney

Terraces, courtyards and narrow frontages where every millimetre of the opening counts.

Local context

Working in City of Sydney

Inner-city work is almost entirely a measuring problem. Terrace frontages are narrow, side passages are often under a metre, and the opening you are fencing was set out by a bricklayer a century ago rather than by a surveyor. Gates here are made to the opening, out of square and all, because there is no tolerance available to absorb a standard size.

Courtyards are the other constant. A rear courtyard behind a terrace is typically overlooked from at least two directions, gets very little cross-ventilation and turns into a heat trap if you enclose it with something solid. That is the exact case louvre panels exist for — screening at eye level with air still moving through.

A lot of the City of Sydney sits within heritage conservation areas, and front fencing in those areas is frequently subject to local controls on height, style and materials. We are not going to tell you what your particular property is allowed. Check with the council before you commit to a front fence design, and tell us what you have been told so the gate or fence is quoted to suit.

What we are usually asked for here

  • Narrow side-passage pedestrian gates
  • Rear courtyard privacy screening
  • Terrace front fencing and small entry gates
  • Screening bins, meters and plant in tight spaces
  • Roof terrace and balcony privacy screens

Site conditions worth planning for

  • Openings are frequently out of square — measure at top, middle and bottom
  • Access for delivery and installation can be genuinely difficult; flag laneway-only or stair access early
  • Heritage conservation areas often control front fence height and style — confirm with council first
  • Courtyards need airflow as much as privacy, which favours louvre over solid panels

Questions

City of Sydney — questions we get asked

Can you make a gate for an out-of-square terrace opening?
Yes — that is the normal case in the inner city rather than the exception. Measure the opening width at the top, the middle and the bottom, and the height on both sides, and send those figures with a photo taken square-on. The gate is then built to the actual opening.
Do I need council approval for a front fence?
That depends on your property, its height and whether it sits in a heritage conservation area — all of which are matters for the City of Sydney rather than for us. Check with the council before committing to a design, and tell us what you have been told so we can quote to suit it.
