Detail

About aluminium vertical picket gates

A picket gate marks the boundary and closes the entry without hiding the property behind it. On a cottage, a Federation home or any frontage with a garden worth seeing, that openness is the reason to choose it — a slat gate on the same house would simply look wrong.

Aluminium keeps the proportions and removes the upkeep. Nothing swells, nothing rots at the base and there is no repainting cycle. Frame, post and picket colours can each be specified separately, which is what makes the two-tone combinations in our photography possible.

Because pickets are spaced to be seen through, these gates are not privacy gates, and they should not be assumed to satisfy pool barrier requirements.

Strengths

What vertical picket does well

  • Keeps an open, traditional frontage rather than walling it off
  • Handles sloping ground well — panels rake and step cleanly
  • Frame, post and picket colours can differ for a two-tone look
  • Suits period, cottage and heritage-adjacent homes where slats look wrong

Trade-offs

What to weigh up

  • Picket spacing means this style is not a privacy screen
  • Pool barriers have specific legal requirements — see the note on our fencing pages before specifying a picket fence near a pool

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are aluminium picket gates better than timber?
For maintenance, clearly — there is nothing to rot, swell or repaint, and pickets cannot work loose off the rails the way timber ones do. Timber still has a texture and softness aluminium cannot copy, though a woodgrain-look powder coat gets closer than most people expect.
Can picket gates be used as pool gates?
Not without specific attention to the pool barrier requirements that apply in your state, which cover gap sizes, heights, climbable zones and self-closing, self-latching hardware. Tell us if the gate is near a pool and we will address it directly rather than leaving you to assume.
