About aluminium louvre gates

A louvre gate is the answer to a specific brief: privacy, but not a wall. Because the blades are angled rather than flat, the gate presents a solid face on the sightline that matters while remaining open to airflow. Standing square-on it reads as a solid plane; step to the side and it opens up.

That combination is why louvre is chosen for wide, tall driveway gates. A genuinely solid gate of the same size is a sail — heavy, hard on its hardware and violent in a gust. A louvre gate gives the same visual result with a fraction of the wind load.

The one thing to decide up front is blade angle, because it sets which direction the privacy works in and it is fixed at manufacture.

Strengths

What louvre does well

  • Blocks the direct sightline from the street while staying open to airflow
  • Looks substantially more solid than its actual open area
  • Lower wind load than a fully sheeted panel of the same size
  • A strong architectural look on contemporary frontages

Trade-offs

What to weigh up

  • Blade angle sets which direction the privacy works in, so it needs to be nominated up front
  • More material per square metre than a widely spaced slat panel

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a louvre gate?
A gate whose infill is made of angled blades rather than flat slats. The angle interrupts the direct line of sight through the gate while leaving a clear air path, so it screens like a solid gate but behaves like an open one in wind.
Can you see through a louvre gate?
Not along the sightline the blades are angled against — that is the purpose of the profile. From an oblique angle, or well above or below the blade angle, you will see through. If you need screening from every direction, say so and we will discuss the alternatives honestly.
