Detail

About aluminium horizontal slat gates

Horizontal slat gates make an opening read wider and lower than it is, which is exactly what you want on a driveway or against a long boundary. They are also the style most modern fencing already uses, so a horizontal gate usually matches what is on site rather than fighting it.

The one variable that changes everything is slat spacing. The same profile builds an open screen or a near-solid privacy gate depending on the gap you choose — so the question to answer before you enquire is not which product you need, but how much you want to see through it.

Strengths

What horizontal slat does well

  • Reads as wider and lower, which suits long runs and wide openings
  • Privacy is dialled in by slat spacing rather than by changing product
  • Sits comfortably against rendered, brick and Colorbond boundaries
  • The most widely specified style, so it matches most existing fencing

Trade-offs

What to weigh up

  • Closely spaced slats catch more wind, which affects post and frame sizing on tall or exposed panels
  • Horizontal lines make any out-of-level ground more noticeable, so raked or stepped runs need to be planned

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical slat gates?
Horizontal slats run left to right and make an opening look wider and lower; vertical slats run top to bottom and make it look taller and more formal. The practical difference is on sloping ground: a vertical gate can be raked to follow the fall while its slats stay plumb, whereas a horizontal gate makes the fall more obvious. Privacy is set by spacing, not direction.
Can horizontal slat gates be made fully private?
They can get very close. Tightening the slat spacing progressively reduces what you can see through until the gate reads as a solid panel from a few metres back. A completely solid gate is a different product with more weight and much more wind load, which is why louvre is often the better answer when total screening is the goal.
