Detail

About aluminium vertical slat fencing

On sloping ground, vertical slat fencing does something horizontal fencing cannot: it follows the grade as one continuous line. The rails rake, the slats stay vertical, and the fence runs parallel to the ground rather than stepping down in blocks. On a long, evenly sloping boundary the difference is significant.

It also adds apparent height, which is useful on a narrow frontage or anywhere the boundary should feel taller than its actual dimension. Privacy is still a function of spacing rather than direction — the slats screen the same amount either way.

Strengths

Why people choose vertical slat fencing

  • Follows sloping ground neatly — slats stay plumb while the panel rakes
  • Adds apparent height, which suits narrow or tall frontages
  • Water and leaf litter shed down the slat rather than sitting on it
  • Reads as more formal and traditional than a horizontal run

Trade-offs

What to weigh up

  • Slightly more framing is needed than an equivalent horizontal panel
  • On very wide openings the vertical rhythm can make a gate look narrower than it is

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does a raked vertical slat fence look like?
The top and bottom rails follow the slope while the slats stay plumb, so the fence forms one continuous line parallel to the ground instead of a series of steps. It suits long, evenly graded boundaries particularly well.
Is vertical slat fencing more expensive than horizontal?
It generally needs a little more framing for an equivalent panel, and raked runs take more set-out than repeating ones. Whether that changes your total depends far more on the length of your run and the height you choose than on the direction of the slats, so it is worth getting both quoted if you are undecided.
