Bespoke work

Custom Orders

Every product on this site is already made to order, so 'custom' here means the things that go beyond a rectangle in a standard colour — arches, rakes, steps, contrasting colours and one-off fixing conditions.

What we get asked for

Six kinds of custom work

Openings that are not rectangles

Arched brick openings, raked tops following a roofline, and frames that step to follow a wall. The photograph of a gate fitted into an existing arched brick opening on this page is exactly that — the frame was made to the arch rather than the arch being modified.

Ground that falls or steps

Sloping driveways and boundaries need panels that either rake with the fall or step down it. Which of those looks right depends on the style — vertical profiles rake gracefully, horizontal ones usually want to step.

Two-tone and contrasting colours

Frame, posts and infill can each be a different colour. The cream fencing with green posts and the cream fencing with red posts in our project photos are both this.

Matching what is already there

A gate to sit in an existing fence line, a panel to close out a gap beside a gate, or a run to continue an existing boundary. Send photos and any colour name you have.

Mixed styles in one project

A louvre gate for privacy at the front and picket fencing along a side boundary is a perfectly sensible combination. There is no requirement to use one style everywhere.

Unusual fixing conditions

Fixing to brick piers, block retaining walls, existing structures or posts that are already in the ground. Each changes the hardware and sometimes the frame.

Example

Two colours, and a slope

This frontage does two custom things at once. The pickets and the posts are finished in different colours, which has to be specified before powder coating rather than decided later. And the run steps down a grassed slope, which means the panels were set out for that fall instead of a level line.

Neither is unusual. Both are the kind of thing that has to be established at quoting, because they are decided at fabrication and cannot be changed afterwards.

How to enquire

What to send us

The more specific you can be, the faster and more accurate the quote. Measurements at three points across the opening, height on both sides, a square-on photograph, and a note about anything unusual — a lean in a pier, a step in the ground, a service running where a post would go.

If you have drawings, plans or inspiration images, attach them. If you have a colour you are trying to match, name it if you can and photograph it in daylight if you cannot.

And tell us what you are actually trying to achieve. A description of the problem — 'the neighbours look straight into the courtyard' — is often more useful than a description of the solution, because it lets us tell you if a different style would do the job better.

Questions

Custom order questions

Is a custom order more expensive?
Not automatically. Everything we make is built to order, so a non-standard width costs no more than a standard one. What does add cost is additional complexity — a curved or arched frame, a raked top, multiple colours in one panel, or unusual fixing arrangements. We will tell you what is driving the price when we quote.
Can you work from a drawing or plan?
Yes, and it helps. Architectural drawings, a builder's plan or a hand sketch with dimensions on it are all useful. You can attach them to your enquiry.
Can you match a colour I already have?
Often, if you can identify it. Send the colour name from the original supplier if you have it, and photographs in daylight. Matching an unknown powder-coat colour precisely is not always possible, and we would rather tell you that up front than deliver a near-miss.
Can you copy a design from a photo I found?
We can usually build something in the same spirit, and inspiration images genuinely help us understand what you are after. What we will not do is claim to reproduce another manufacturer's product exactly when the profile and construction may differ.
What is the most useful thing to send with a custom enquiry?
A photo of the site taken square-on, with the measurements written on it. That single image communicates more than several paragraphs of description and is the fastest route to an accurate quote.

Describe what you need

Send measurements, photos and any drawings. If it can be fabricated, we will tell you what it costs — and if it cannot, we will tell you that too.
