Charcoal louvre double gates. The blades are set on an angle so the gate blocks the direct sightline while still letting air through.

The photo shows the louvre blade profile and finish on a double gate. We do not yet have project photography of a completed louvre sliding gate.

The detail

About aluminium louvre slat sliding gates

A louvre sliding gate puts the most private infill we build onto the configuration that needs no swing room. It suits a front boundary that runs tight to the driveway, where the owner wants the yard genuinely screened from the street but the gate has nowhere to open into.

Weight is the thing to be aware of. A louvre panel is the heaviest infill for a given size, and a sliding gate carries its entire weight on its guides and rollers rather than sharing it between two hinges. That makes the guide arrangement, and the accuracy of the ground it runs over, more important than on a lighter slat gate. It is a very achievable gate — it just needs to be set out properly.

Run-back space is still the first thing to check: clear space beside the opening roughly as wide as the opening, along the full travel. If the run-back is against a boundary fence, the louvre blades give you the useful side effect of screening that stretch of fence as well when the gate is parked.

Blade angle is nominated before manufacture and, on a sliding gate, is normally set to screen from the street inward.

Questions

Aluminium Louvre Slat Sliding Gates — questions we get asked

Is a louvre sliding gate too heavy to be practical?
No, but it needs to be designed rather than assumed. Louvre infill is heavier than spaced slats, and a sliding gate carries all of that weight on its guides. We size the frame, guides and — where fitted — the motor against your actual dimensions instead of applying a standard detail.
How much run-back do I need?
Roughly the width of the opening, clear of obstructions along the entire travel. Measure it before you enquire, because it determines whether a sliding gate is feasible at your property regardless of the infill you choose.
Will the gate screen the run-back area too?
When the gate is parked open it sits over that stretch, so yes — it screens whatever it is parked in front of. Some owners use that deliberately to hide a side fence or a bin area.
