Charcoal louvre double gates. The blades are set on an angle so the gate blocks the direct sightline while still letting air through.

The detail

About aluminium louvre slat double gates

This is the configuration in our louvre photography: a pair of charcoal louvre leaves closing a driveway beside a brick home. From the footpath the gates read as a solid dark plane, which is exactly the effect most people are after on a front boundary — the car, the bins and the yard behind simply are not part of the streetscape any more.

What the photo cannot show is the airflow. A solid pair of gates that size is a sail; it needs heavier hardware, it swings hard in a gust and it puts real load into the posts. The louvre profile passes air straight through while presenting the same visual barrier, which is why it is the practical choice for a wide, tall, private driveway gate rather than just an aesthetic one.

As with any pair, the leaves are set out together and then divided so the blade lines run true across the centre join. Blade angle is nominated before manufacture and applies across both leaves.

Louvre panels are the heaviest infill we offer for a given size, so on a wide driveway the hardware and post sizing carry more importance than on a spaced slat gate. If automation is planned, that combination especially needs to be designed in from the start rather than added later.

Suits

  • Private driveway and front-boundary gates
  • Frontages overlooked by a road, footpath or neighbour
  • Contemporary homes where a solid dark plane suits the architecture
  • Wide openings where a solid gate would catch too much wind

Before you order

  • Both leaves still swing, so each side needs its arc kept clear
  • Ground fall across the opening affects how low the leaves can be built
  • Leaves do not have to be equal — an uneven split can suit an off-centre driveway

Questions

Aluminium Louvre Slat Double Gates — questions we get asked

Are louvre gates more private than closely spaced slats?
On the direct sightline, generally yes — the blade angle is doing the screening rather than a narrow gap, so there is no straight line through the panel at eye level. Closely spaced slats can get close, but they buy that privacy with a smaller air gap and therefore more wind load.
Are louvre gates heavier than slat gates?
Yes. There is more aluminium per square metre in a louvre panel than in a spaced slat panel of the same size. That affects hinge, post and, where fitted, motor selection, all of which we size against your actual dimensions at quoting.
Can louvre gates be automated?
Yes, and it should be planned before manufacture. The extra panel weight makes the choice of hardware and motor more consequential than on a lighter gate, and the posts need to suit. Flag automation in your enquiry so the gate is designed for it.
Can I have matching louvre fencing beside the gates?
Yes — matching fencing either side of the gates is a common way to carry the same screening across the whole frontage. Include the fence lengths and heights in your enquiry along with the gate opening and we will quote both together.
