A completed horizontal slat gate leaf before installation, showing the welded perimeter frame and evenly spaced slats.

We do not yet have project photography of a completed vertical slat gate. The diagram shows the vertical slat arrangement; the photo shows the frame and slat construction used across our gates, in the horizontal orientation.

Vertical Slat Gates

Aluminium Vertical Slat Single Gates

The flat slat profile turned on end, in a single hinged leaf. Adds height to a frontage and handles ground fall better than a horizontal panel.

The detail

About aluminium vertical slat single gates

A vertical slat single gate uses the same flat aluminium slat as a horizontal panel, rotated to run top to bottom between a top and bottom rail. The change of direction does more than you would expect: the eye follows the slats upward, so the gate and the frontage it sits in read taller and more formal.

The practical advantage shows up on sloping ground. Where a horizontal gate makes every millimetre of fall obvious — because the slat lines and the ground line disagree — a vertical gate can have its bottom rail raked to follow the fall while every slat stays plumb. The result looks intentional rather than like a gate fighting the site.

Vertical slats also shed better. Water runs down the face of the slat instead of sitting on the top edge, and leaf litter has less to catch on. On a shaded southern boundary or under a tree, that is a real maintenance difference over years rather than a marketing point.

As with any single leaf, the limits are weight and swing arc. Nominate your hinge side and check what the gate opens into before you settle on a width.

Suits

  • Side access on sloping blocks
  • Narrow frontages that benefit from apparent height
  • Entries where a more formal look is wanted
  • Matching an existing vertical slat or batten fence
  • Shaded or leaf-heavy locations

Before you order

  • The gate needs a clear arc to swing into — measure that space, not just the opening
  • Hinge side is set at fabrication, so nominate which side you want it hung
  • Wider single leaves need heavier hinges and posts

Questions

Aluminium Vertical Slat Single Gates — questions we get asked

Should I choose vertical or horizontal slats?
Horizontal slats make an opening read wider and lower and match most existing slat fencing, so they are the usual choice on wide driveways and long boundary runs. Vertical slats add apparent height, look more formal, and cope far better with sloping ground because the panel can rake while the slats stay plumb. If your ground falls noticeably across the opening, vertical is worth serious consideration.
Can a vertical slat gate follow a slope?
Yes. The bottom rail can be raked so the gate follows the fall of the ground while the slats stay vertical. Include a photo of the opening taken square-on from a few metres back with your enquiry so we can see the fall, and note roughly how much higher one side is than the other.
Is a vertical slat gate more private than a horizontal one?
Privacy comes from spacing, not direction. At the same gap, a vertical and a horizontal gate screen about the same amount head-on. The difference is in how they read from an angle and how they handle the ground, not in how much you can see through.
