Large blocks, bushland edges and steep driveways through Sydney's northern bushland fringe.

Local context
Hornsby Shire runs from established suburbia down to genuine bushland, and the further north and west you go the more the site drives the specification. Steep driveways are common, and a driveway that rises sharply from the street is the clearest case there is for a sliding gate rather than a swing pair.
Bushland interfaces mean bush fire prone land applies to a significant number of properties. Construction requirements on those properties are a matter for your certifier and council, and worth confirming before you specify anything — we will build to whatever requirement you have been given, but we are not the ones who determine it.
On the larger blocks, fence runs get long. Consistent bay set-out matters more over 60 metres than over 10, and the decision to step or rake a sloping run has a much bigger visual effect at that length.
Recommended
Based on the housing, terrain and exposure described above — not a fixed rule, and every project gets specified on its own merits.

Vertical Slat
The flat slat profile turned on end, in a single hinged leaf. Adds height to a frontage and handles ground fall better than a horizontal panel.

Horizontal Slat
One leaf, hung on hinges, with flat aluminium slats running the width of the gate. The workhorse of side access — built to your opening rather than cut down from a stock size.

Vertical Picket
A traditional picket gate built in powder-coated aluminium. Keeps a frontage open and welcoming rather than screened off.
