The Hills has the widest driveways and the largest front setbacks we regularly work with, and that combination pushes the work towards a specific product: wide double or sliding driveway gates, usually automated, often with matching fencing running the full frontage.

At those widths the specification stops being cosmetic. Leaf weight, hinge and post selection and — where a motor is fitted — the load it has to move all scale with the size of the gate, and a louvre infill weighs considerably more than a spaced slat one. This is the area where getting the gate designed around its actual dimensions rather than adapted from a standard detail makes the most difference.

Blocks are often gently sloping rather than flat, which affects ground clearance under swing leaves. Where the driveway rises towards the house, a sliding gate or a vertical slat pair usually gives a better result than a horizontal swing pair.
